One of the great benefits of Sigma Phi Society is its abidng commitment to truth through scholarly endeavor.
It has always been our belief that academics are the cornerstone of the college experience. This is best embodied by the Viele scholarship which is one of the largest fraternal scholarship funds in the world. Students in Sigma Phi are strongly encouraged to apply for this scholarship since approximately 40-50% of those who apply stand to receive several thousand dollars per award. The criteria for the award are: grade point average, need, and service to the Society. Although good grades are highly stressed in Sigma Phi, a general balance of the three criteria is highly desired. Last year the Viele scholarship fund awarded about $100,000.00 to over 30 recipients.
In addition to the Viele, the Scholars in Residence program (SIR) awards a $500.00 grant to those brothers who maintain a GPA of 3.25 or higher throughout the academic year.
Also, the Sigma Phi Educational Foundation (SPEF) exists to make educational grants to the chapters. These grants could fund such projects as wireless internet in the chapters, educational seminars, endowing speakers on campus or even the recent installation of a music studio at our Berkeley chapter.
Sigma Phi clearly goes to great lengths to support the scholarly pursuits of our members and in addition to the aforementioned scholarships and programs, we continue to look for new ways to encourage the success of our members.
